MOHELA is Proud to Support the PSLF Program as over 1 Million Borrowers Receive Relief

MOHELA processed more than 75% of the over 1 million borrowers forgiven

St. Louis, MO - Oct. 17, 2024 - MOHELA, a non-profit government corporation dedicated to helping the student loan borrowers it serves, issued a statement today as a federal loan servicing contractor helping to support the government's Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program. This forgiveness program has now reached the milestone of providing relief for over 1 million federal borrowers.

"MOHELA is proud of our work supporting teachers and other public servants as the government reaches the milestone of providing relief for over 1 million federal borrowers under the PSLF program," said Scott Giles, CEO and Executive Director of MOHELA. "No servicer in the history of the PSLF program has processed the forgiveness relief of loans held by teachers and other public servants than MOHELA during its time as the government’s interim PSLF servicer.”

From July 1, 2022, through April 30, 2024, MOHELA supported the federal government as the interim PSLF servicer during a time of expansion of the program. In total, MOHELA processed over $55 billion in PSLF forgiveness for over 756,000 borrowers, under the direction of FSA. In contrast, directly prior to MOHELA becoming the PSLF servicer, only about 165,000 borrowers had received $10.5 billion in loan forgiveness during the previous five-year period from 2017 through June 2022. As one of the loan servicing contractors for FSA, MOHELA continues to assist Federal Student Aid (FSA) with processing borrowers’ PSLF requests today.

The final decision on a borrower’s request to discharge their loan under the PSLF Program is made by FSA as the owner of the loan, not MOHELA.
